An emergency is a sudden, serious, and frequently hazardous crisis that puts people’s health, lives, property, or the environment in jeopardy right away and calls for rapid action.

In the majority of states in the United States, if a person asks the use of a phone line (such as a party line) to report an emergency, they are required to print a notice stating that they must give up their usage of the line. According to state law, an emergency is “…a situation where life, health, or property are at risk and the rapid summoning of assistance is imperative.”
